How do botulinum toxin injections work?
When you squint or frown, the muscles between your eyebrows contract, causing the skin to furrow and fold. Over time, as your skin ages and loses some of its elasticity, these repeated contractions can cause persistent frown lines. Injections will temporarily reduce muscle activity. You will begin to notice a visible smoothing of the frown lines between your brows, your crow’s feet lines and your forehead lines.
How do I know if botulinum toxin injections are right for me?
If you are an adult with moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines it may be right for you. Talk to your doctor to discuss the benefits and risks of treatment. Do not use if you are allergic to botulinum toxin or any of the other ingredients in the products. You should also not use if you have had an allergic reaction to any other botulinum toxin product or have a skin infection at the planned injection site.
What should I tell my doctor before treatment?
Before receiving treatment, you should tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions, including whether you have a disease that affects your muscles and nerves, have allergies to any botulinum toxin product, or have experienced any side effect from any other botulinum toxin in the past. In addition, tell your doctor about your medical history and all the medicines you take, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Especially tell your doctor if you have received any other botulinum toxin product in the last four months or in the past. Be sure your doctor knows exactly which product(s) you received and when you received them.
What can I expect during treatment?
During treatment, which usually takes about 10-20 minutes, your doctor will inject into the muscles in the designated area. No anesthesia is required; however, your physician may use a topical anesthetic or cold pack to reduce any discomfort.
How long is the recovery time after treatment?
Treatment requires minimal downtime, so you can return to your daily routine immediately after you leave your specialist’s office.
Treatment with injections is customized to your goals and needs. When you meet with your specialist, he or she will determine the appropriate treatment for any areas you wish to address, including moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines.
For the crow’s feet area, your specialist will inject 3 areas of the muscle that frames the side of the eye. This will be repeated on the muscle that frames the other eye.
For the frown lines area, your specialist will administer multiple injections into the muscles between your brows and in your forehead.
For the forehead lines area, your specialist will administer multiple injections into a muscle in your forehead.
When can I expect to see results?
You may begin to notice results within 24 to 48 hours, with results lasting up to four months for moderate to severe frown lines. Remember that results vary from patient to patient though, so your physician will plan your next appointment based on your results and aesthetic goals.
What are the most common side effects of botulinum toxin injections?
Injections may cause serious side effects, including allergic reactions. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include: itching, rash, redness, swelling, wheezing, asthma symptoms, or dizziness or feeling faint. Tell your doctor or seek medical help right away if you have wheezing, experience other asthma symptoms, or if you become dizzy or faint. In the treatment of frown lines between the eyebrows, headache was the most common side effect. Injections may cause loss of strength or general muscle weakness, blurred vision, or drooping eyelids within hours to weeks of being injected. If this happens, do not drive a car, operate machinery, or do other dangerous activities. Tell your doctor if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not subside. These are not all of the possible side effects of injections, for more information please speak with your provider.
Will my face look overdone or unnatural?
Looking plastic or overdone is a common concern among individuals considering an in-office treatment for moderate to severe frown lines. Talk to your licensed, trained, healthcare professional. There are steps you can take to make you feel more comfortable. First, have a detailed discussion with your provider. You want to talk through every concern you have, until you feel comfortable. Your provider, who is experienced in facial anatomy, can determine the right options for you. WHAT IS KYBELLA®?
KYBELLA® is a prescription medicine and is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called “double chin.”
It is not known if KYBELLA® is safe and effective for use outside of the submental area or in children less than 18 years of age.
HOW DOES KYBELLA® WORK?
The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is synthetic deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, KYBELLA® destroys fat cells, and once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat. This results in a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin, revealing an improved chin profile.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
Your specialist will create a tailored treatment plan based on your chin profile. At each treatment, you will be given multiple small injections under your chin. You may receive up to 6 treatment sessions, spaced at least 1 month apart. Many patients experience visible results in 2 to 4 KYBELLA® treatments. 59% of patients received 6 treatments in clinical studies.
HOW LONG WILL RESULTS LAST?
When injected into fat under the chin, KYBELLA® causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. After reaching your desired aesthetic, further treatment is not expected.
