Allergy Q & A

What is an allergy?

An allergy is an immune system reaction to substances that shouldn’t cause you any harm, such as food, or an excessive reaction to mildly harmful or unpleasant substances like mold.

Your immune system is vital to life and does an amazing job of protecting you from invading organisms and germs. The immune system produces antibodies to counter potential threats like bacteria and viruses.

For reasons that aren’t entirely clear, some people’s immune systems also produce antibodies in response to non-threatening substances, and this causes an allergic reaction.

What is an allergen?

An allergen is a substance that sets off an allergic reaction. Common allergens include:

  • Weeds
  • Grasses
  • Trees
  • Dust mites
  • Molds
  • Cats and dogs
  • Horses
  • Feathers
  • Cockroaches
  • Dairy
  • Wheat

These are all types of allergens for which Flagstaff Surgical Associates can test you.

What are the symptoms of an allergy?

Allergy symptoms vary depending on which bodily systems they affect. For example, if you inhale environmental allergens like pollen or dust, they’re likely to affect your respiratory system, causing symptoms such as:

  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Congestion
  • Red, watering eyes

Allergies to food can cause problems like:

  • Swollen face, tongue, and lips
  • Tingling mouth
  • Hives
  • Throat tightening
  • Red, itchy skin
  • Flaking or peeling skin

Severe allergic reactions can cause anaphylaxis, which is a life-threatening complication of some allergies.

The first step to identifying your allergy is to test potential allergens to see which affects you. Flagstaff Surgical Associates uses the modified quantitative testing system.

This is a two-hour process that consists of two stages. The first stage is a skin prick test on your back. The second stage involves having intradermal injections on your upper arms.

How are allergies treated?

Flagstaff Surgical Associates offers immunotherapy for the treatment of allergies. Immunotherapy aims to introduce the allergen to your system gradually over a long period until you get used to it, and your body stops reacting.

Every patient receives individualized immunotherapy treatment according to the results of their allergy screening.

Your provider gives you injections or drops containing the substance to which you’re allergic. Injections begin with weekly jabs that build up to a maintenance dose.

This is the level of allergen you need in your system for your body to get used to it. It can take a year to reach the maintenance level; then you have an injection once a month.

Sublingual drops go under your tongue every day to start with for three months. Both allergy shots and allergy drops can take between three and five years to have a noticeable effect.
